Choose the project before the contractor search
Start with what will change. Putting together a boxed product, fixing it to a wall, connecting it to a utility and altering an opening are different parts of a project. A request that says only “installation” can leave the business guessing about the surface, connection and finishing work.
Share the model, instructions, photographs and measurements that describe the actual job. Use the task-specific service guide to identify questions, then ask the business which parts it proposes to perform and whether separate specialist work needs to be arranged. No service guide grants permission to carry out regulated work.
Use CSLB’s tools for the actual contractor role
California’s Contractors State License Board separates its consumer information into license or Home Improvement Salesperson checks, contractor-type guidance, contracts and building-permit questions. Choose the route that matches the question you need answered, rather than treating all of those checks as one search.
Keep the exact business identity and any supplied license information beside the work description. The CSLB resource can help you investigate the relevant record and role. It does not mean that this directory has checked that contractor for your project, or that a proposed alteration already has approval.
Take the California city and property details to the discussion
Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose and Sacramento have their own existing directory routes. Choose the place where the property is located; the state’s city list describes this website’s geography, not the territory of every listed company. Read the published service-area information on the profile before contacting it.
For the project conversation, explain the mounting surface, access to the work area, any old item to remove and the finish you expect. Ask which local authority should answer the property-specific permit question. Keep the response with the proposed scope, rather than assuming a product’s small size settles the requirements.
California project questions
Where should I start if a California assembly job also involves a building attachment?
Describe assembly and attachment as separate parts of the request. Supply the product instructions and information about the proposed location. Then use CSLB’s contractor-type and permit resources, as relevant, and ask the provider which work it has actually included.
Can a California city guide confirm the contractor classification or permit for my project?
The city guide provides navigation and published business information. It does not decide a contractor classification or approve work at a property. Use CSLB’s consumer routes and the relevant project authority with the exact scope and business identity.
