For a rented home, confirm who can authorize alterations. In a shared building, ask about access and work rules. A citywide construction period does not establish the age, condition or safety requirements of an individual home; check the property records and the specific project.
Choose the work you need to plan
Use the project guides to identify the work, then check listings against the property’s city and state. A guide link does not mean a provider is available for every task or address.

San Diego repair planning: the local decisions
Find the San Diego property before defining the job
Check that the project address is within the City of San Diego before using the city’s development records or sending it a permit question. A San Diego County or mailing-area description is not enough to choose an authority. Give the same precise location to any business you contact and ask whether it accepts that address.
Write the work list around the actual dwelling: which room, which component and what result you want. Separate a door adjustment from replacing the frame or enlarging the opening. A photograph of the whole assembly, followed by the damaged or misaligned detail, is more useful than a request to “fix the door.”
Use records to explain previous work
The city’s Records page links Permit Finder, OpenDSD and Accela for researching projects and approvals. A project or permit number you already know can help explain an earlier alteration. Keep the reference with your photos rather than expecting the next business to reconstruct the history from a brief message.
The department notes that not every type of property record is available. A search that returns nothing therefore does not prove that work never happened or that a new proposal needs no approval. Building-plan review also has a separate appointment route; follow the Records page when the online entry does not answer the question.
Give a repair provider useful existing-condition details
For an existing installation, identify what you hope to retain: the opening, frame, cabinet box, fixing points or finish. Note missing parts and any known previous repair. Ask the business to distinguish diagnosis or assessment from an agreed repair, and to state whether materials and finish matching are included.
Choose a project guide for the specific component, then compare the published business information. If the work expands into an opening change, utility connection or another specialty, agree how that additional scope will be checked before treating it as part of the original repair.

Questions for San Diego project planning
Where can I start researching a San Diego property’s permit history?
Start with the City of San Diego Development Services Records page. It links Permit Finder, OpenDSD and Accela and explains other record-request routes. The department cautions that some record types may be unavailable.
Does a missing San Diego online record settle whether a new repair needs approval?
No. The city explains that record availability has changed over time. Ask Development Services about the proposed work and actual address; a missing search result does not determine the approval route for a new repair.
