Verify that the observation belongs to your meter
Redding’s leak guide says a meter number on the protective cap matches the utility bill when several meters are present. The Water Utility offers help with readings. If you cannot safely identify the relevant number, ask for assistance rather than opening or manipulating equipment to investigate.
Record the confirmed identifier with the date of any observation. At a shared property, clarify which account and part of the building are being discussed before attaching a reading to one household’s repair request. A number copied from the wrong meter can send the inquiry toward the wrong work area.
Carry readings and symptoms into the same inquiry
The city guide treats meter movement with water use off as an indication of a possible leak. That evidence does not locate a faulty fixture. Keep the observation separate from visible symptoms such as a running toilet, dripping faucet or wet outdoor area.
Bring both pieces of information to the appropriate assessment: the confirmed meter reference and a description of where or when you notice the problem. Note any known irrigation or other water-use activity that could affect the observation. No meter, bill or plumbing system was inspected for this guide.
What if several water meters are near my Redding home?
The city describes matching the meter number with the utility bill. If identity remains unclear or the number cannot be safely read, ask the Water Utility for help before relying on a reading.
Does movement at the correct meter identify the leaking fixture?
No. The city describes possible-leak evidence at the meter. A separate assessment is needed to identify a cause; pair dated observations with the actual indoor or outdoor symptoms.

For a rented home, confirm who can authorize alterations. In a shared building, ask about access and work rules. A citywide construction period does not establish the age, condition or safety requirements of an individual home; check the property records and the specific project.
