Scope of general door installation & repair
Door work should distinguish adjustment of an existing door from replacement of the slab, frame, or complete assembly. Provide dimensions and photographs of hinges, latching points, and surrounding trim. Ask what the proposal includes for removal, fitting, seals, hardware, and finishing, and identify any damage or movement affecting the opening.
Identify the complete door assembly
Describe an interior or exterior door, its material and whether you need a slab, prehung unit or repair to the existing assembly. Show the frame, threshold, hinges and surrounding finishes. State the actual problem: sticking, damage, poor latching, a gap or a planned replacement. Those symptoms can lead to different work and should not be collapsed into a vague request to fix the door.
Review the opening before selecting work
Ask the provider to assess measurements, support and the condition of the frame or adjacent wall. An exterior opening can involve weather details beyond the slab itself. A special-rated, automatic or commercial assembly may require specific experience and product compliance checks. Enlarging an opening, replacing damaged framing and moving utilities should be separately identified, with local requirements checked for the actual project.
Agree what the finished door includes
The proposal should identify the door, accepted hardware, trim, finishing and normal operation checks. Painting, lock changes and repairs to surrounding walls may need separate stages. If the main task is a barn, pocket, patio or screen door, use that product-specific brief instead. Record unresolved frame damage rather than treating a newly hung slab as proof that the entire opening has been repaired.
Related work with a different scope
- Door Handle & Hardware Installation: Hardware-only replacement can be a narrower task.
- Barn Door Installation: Barn doors travel across the wall on a surface track.
- Pocket Door Installation: Pocket doors require a wall-cavity system.
- Patio & Sliding Door Installation & Repair: Patio and sliding doors have their own frame, glazing and track scope.
Project questions
What is the difference between replacing a door slab and its complete frame?
Tell the provider which parts you intend to retain. Supply photographs of hinges, latching points and trim so fitting a new slab can be distinguished from replacing the whole assembly.
What should a door-repair estimate say about surrounding finishes?
Identify seals, hardware, removal and trim or paint work in the scope. Show any movement or damage around the opening that could affect more than a simple adjustment.
