Evaluate an unexpected offer before adding it to the repair list

An unsolicited offer may describe a problem or a repair that you have not yet investigated. Record what you observed separately from what the seller says needs doing. Ask for an identifiable business and a written description of the proposed result before adding that work to your plans.

Indiana’s AG storm-chaser leaflet advises taking time, researching the business and comparing written bids. Use that advice if you receive such an offer; the resource does not establish that a storm has occurred at your address or that any listed provider offers an immediate visit.

Separate temporary assistance from the final repair scope

Removal of fallen or loose material and restoration of the affected item are separate questions. Ask whether a proposed visit includes only removal, an assessment of the item, repair, or the final finish. If its condition needs specialist review, identify that unanswered step rather than assuming cleanup resolves it.

Keep the original description and the written additions together. The Indiana leaflet recommends retaining the contract, change orders, warranties and correspondence. That record helps distinguish the work first discussed from anything added after assessment.

Take the address to the appropriate Indiana office

Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Evansville and South Bend are separate city routes. Choose the actual project location, then check each business’s stated territory and confirm the address directly. The directory does not maintain a live dispatch schedule.

The AG leaflet points to city or county building departments for local licensing and permit questions. Give the relevant office the address and proposed work; a city guide is not a permit-jurisdiction map or an approval for a particular repair.

Indiana project questions

A visitor offers to repair my Indiana home immediately. What should I compare?

Ask what specific work is proposed, which business is offering it and how the written scope compares with other bids. Do not let the offered timing substitute for a review of the company and the proposed result.

What should stay in my Indiana project file when the work changes?

Retain the contract, written change orders, warranties and correspondence, as the AG leaflet recommends. Keep the original and revised scope identifiable.

For a rented home, confirm who can authorize alterations. In a shared building, ask about access and work rules. An area-wide construction period does not establish the age, condition or safety requirements of an individual home; check the property records and the specific project.
