For a rented home, confirm who can authorize alterations. In a shared building, ask about access and work rules. A citywide construction period does not establish the age, condition or safety requirements of an individual home; check the property records and the specific project.

Chicago repair planning: the local decisions
Split a Chicago punch list at the building component
Keep assembly, cabinet hardware and small finish repairs in their own group. Describe a porch, deck, exterior window or masonry proposal separately, even if you hope one business can organize the visit. The name “handyman” does not establish that every building component is within that business’s offer.
For an apartment or shared building, say whether an item belongs to the individual unit or a common area. Confirm who can authorize work and arrange access. Include the floor and building side when describing an exterior component; an isolated close-up can omit the context needed to understand the request.
Take exterior work to the city’s matching worktype
Chicago’s official Building Permit Application Instructions provide work-type entries, including porch, deck, balcony and fire-escape repair. The city also publishes an Express Permit Program overview. Start with the entry that matches the proposed component and ask the Department of Buildings which route applies to the actual work.
Do not decide that an exterior repair is exempt because the visible defect looks small or the expected bill is modest. Describe whether the proposal retains, repairs or replaces existing parts and whether it changes the structure. That gives the city a clearer question without assuming the answer from a directory category.
Make work inside and outside the unit comparable
Prepare annotated photographs and any dimensions that can be recorded safely from an accessible position. A business may need an assessment before it can define a repair. Ask it to distinguish that assessment from the repair price and to identify what further information would change the proposal.
For comparison, keep separate lines for accepted repair work, materials, finish restoration, debris removal and any permit or inspection responsibilities. Read each profile’s source and area information, and ask about qualifications for the particular component. Published directory information does not itself certify the building’s condition or the business’s credentials.

Questions for Chicago project planning
Where should a Chicago porch or deck repair be matched to city instructions?
Use the corresponding work-type entry in Chicago’s official Building Permit Application Instructions. Describe the component and intended changes to the Department of Buildings so it can identify the appropriate process for the property.
Should a Chicago interior punch list and porch repair be one undivided request?
It helps to split them into separate components. That lets a business confirm its accepted work and keeps the exterior project’s assessment and city questions visible, instead of hiding them inside a general maintenance request.
