Ask for an exemption decision before assuming a small job is exempt
The official city search excerpt describes a Residential Permit Exemption Request for certain cosmetic, non-structural single-family projects. It explicitly says that projects do not automatically qualify based on price: the Building Official evaluates the request. City resource.
Use the city’s named resource to ask about the actual property and proposed work. A short description such as “patch and paint” can omit changes behind the finish or to an adjoining component. Make those uncertainties part of the question instead of deciding for yourself that the whole project fits an exemption.
Keep the estimate aligned with the proposed finish work
Identify the surfaces, quantities and components in the estimate. State what remains in place, what would be removed and what is excluded. If further assessment reveals a different scope, obtain an updated description before relying on the earlier price or review.
When comparing proposals, check that they describe the same finish work and the same boundaries. Ask who will take unresolved structural or system questions back to the city. This keeps a convenient small-project label from becoming a substitute for a decision about the work that will actually occur.
Project questions
Does a low Fort Lauderdale estimate automatically qualify a project for an exemption?
No. The city’s official excerpt says qualification is not automatic and identifies a request reviewed by the Building Official. Use that process for the exact scope rather than relying on the amount alone.
What should I do if the proposed Fort Lauderdale repair changes after the estimate?
Update the written scope and ask the city whether the earlier determination still applies. Keep the revised description with the estimate so everyone is discussing the same proposed work.

For a rented home, confirm who can authorize alterations. In a shared building, ask about access and work rules. A citywide construction period does not establish the age, condition or safety requirements of an individual home; check the property records and the specific project.
