South Carolina handyman and repair directory

Choose the South Carolina location, investigate the proposing business and compare the written offer with the repair you intended to buy. The official consumer and license resources below answer different parts of that research.

Choose the South Carolina city before reviewing an offer

Charleston, Columbia and Greenville are distinct directory starting points. Open the property’s city guide and review the business profile before contacting it. A nearby-city listing or a statewide page title is not confirmation that the business serves your address.

Write down the problem you observed before reviewing an additional offer. If someone proposes removal, replacement or a broader repair, keep each proposed result visible in the request. That makes it easier to compare the original need with the work you are being asked to authorize.

Check the business background and the licensed role separately

South Carolina’s Department of Consumer Affairs directs consumers to Background a Business for complaint research and agency lookup routes. Its contractor alert also points to LLR’s Licensee Lookup for professional contractor checks. Those are separate research tools, not interchangeable assurances about a business.

The cited December 2024 alert supplies hiring guidance, not evidence of a current storm or repair shortage. Keep the exact business identity with your research.

Compare the requested repair with the proposal in front of you

SCDCA recommends comparing bids and obtaining a completed written agreement whose terms you understand. For a cleanup-and-repair proposal, ask whether removal, repair of the affected component and cosmetic finishing are each included; a short heading may leave those outcomes unclear.

Check that the identity on the proposal matches the party you researched. If a different person or business will perform part of the work, ask how that responsibility appears in the agreement. Confirm the address and timing directly with the business once the proposed scope is clear.

South Carolina project questions

Does South Carolina’s business complaint search replace an LLR license check?

No. SCDCA refers consumers to business-background and complaint resources as well as LLR’s professional contractor lookup. Follow the route relevant to each question. A complaint search alone does not establish a license, workmanship or current service coverage.

How should I compare a door-to-door repair offer in South Carolina?

Compare it with the problem you had already identified. Ask for the business identity, the proposed result and a written description you can review alongside other offers. Investigate the business before authorizing added work; an unsolicited offer is not a property assessment by this directory.

For a rented home, confirm who can authorize alterations. In a shared building, ask about access and work rules. An area-wide construction period does not establish the age, condition or safety requirements of an individual home; check the property records and the specific project.
