Scope of tile installation & repair
Tile work needs the tile type, surface, layout, substrate, and the extent of any existing damage. Explain whether the job is a new installation, a loose or broken tile, or a broader moisture problem. Discuss preparation, waterproofing where applicable, setting, grout, transitions, and finishing with a provider experienced in the particular application.
Distinguish a tile defect from a failing assembly
A cracked tile, loose group of tiles and deteriorated grout are different starting points. Tell the contractor whether the work is on a floor, wall or wet area and describe movement, hollow spots or recurring cracks. Identify the tile material and provide spare pieces if available. Replacing a visible tile does not establish that the supporting assembly is sound.
For a new installation, discuss the substrate, layout, edges, movement accommodation and the product system proposed for the location. Waterproofing in a shower is a separate functional layer from the tile finish. Ask which preparatory and waterproofing work is included rather than treating every tiled surface as the same installation.
Agree on layout and repair appearance
A partial repair may not match older tile or grout exactly. Ask the installer to explain the proposed repair boundary and how adjacent pieces will be protected. For replacement work, establish the tile pattern, transitions, trim and responsibility for material quantities. Clarify who moves fixtures or appliances and who handles any plumbing or electrical work. Grout-only maintenance, a tile replacement and rebuilding a wet-area assembly should be quoted as different scopes with different intended results.
Related work with a different scope
- Grout Repair: Grout repair concerns joints and does not automatically resolve movement beneath tiles.
- Shower Tile Installation & Repair: Shower tile needs a wet-area-specific assessment and waterproofing scope.
Project questions
What should I tell a tiler about a loose or broken tile?
Describe the surface, tile type and surrounding condition, including any moisture symptoms. Ask the provider to assess the cause and repair boundary rather than assume replacing one visible tile is sufficient.
Which stages belong in a tile-installation proposal?
Agree on substrate preparation, waterproofing where relevant, tile layout, setting, grout and transitions. Identify final finishing and any surrounding repairs so proposals cover the same intended result.
