Scope of outdoor lighting installation
Outdoor-lighting installation should identify the fixtures, power arrangement, controls, and the areas to be illuminated. Provide a site sketch and photographs showing paths, walls, planting, or other obstacles. Separate light placement from electrical supply, excavation, and repairs to surfaces, and have qualified providers assess suitability for the actual outdoor environment.
Define the exterior lighting purpose
Identify whether you need path, entry, landscape, security or another functional outdoor lighting arrangement. Provide product models if chosen and a marked photograph of desired positions. A plug-in decorative set, low-voltage landscape system and fixed-wired fixture can need different work. State whether design and product supply are required or whether the provider is installing a defined selection.
Review exposure, power and routes
The selected products must suit their actual location and manufacturer's instructions. Show the existing power, proposed cable route and access conditions without opening equipment. Ask who assesses the supply and any fixed electrical work, and who handles excavation, utility-location arrangements or changes to exterior surfaces. An outdoor-lighting quote should not silently include new circuits, trenches or unrestricted work at height.
Make controls and finish work explicit
Agree on accepted fixtures, attachments, cable treatment, controls and ordinary operating checks. Identify app setup, timers and motion controls where needed. A permanently mounted eave-light system and a temporary seasonal display have different planning and removal expectations; use their dedicated pages when those are the main project. Record unfinished electrical or surface repairs rather than treating lights turning on as the entire handover.
Related work with a different scope
- Permanent Outdoor Lighting Installation: Permanent decorative outdoor lighting concerns a year-round installed system.
- Seasonal & Holiday Lighting Installation: Seasonal lighting includes temporary display and takedown planning.
- Motion Sensor Installation: Motion-control devices require their own detection and behavior brief.
Project questions
What site information helps plan outdoor lighting?
Mark proposed fixtures and illuminated areas on a sketch, with photographs of paths, walls and planting. Identify power and control preferences so positioning can be reviewed alongside the installation scope.
Does an outdoor-lighting proposal include digging and restoring surfaces?
Ask for electrical supply, excavation, fixture installation and reinstatement to be identified separately. Qualified providers should assess the actual outdoor conditions and agree on responsibility for each stage.
