Scope of crown molding installation & repair
Crown molding needs the room dimensions, ceiling transitions, chosen profile, and the condition of adjoining surfaces. Provide photographs of corners and any existing molding to be matched. Clarify removal, fitting, joint finishing, caulking, and paint, since supplying and attaching trim is a different scope from delivering a fully finished room.
Choose the profile and extent of work
Give the room dimensions and photographs of the wall-to-ceiling junction, existing molding and any damaged sections. Identify the desired material and profile where known. Replacing a short length can require matching a discontinued shape, while a new room installation allows a coordinated selection. Ask whether matching, supply or custom fabrication is included rather than assuming the contractor can reproduce any existing molding.
Show corners, height and surrounding details
Ceiling height, irregular corners, bulkheads and nearby cabinets can change access and joint planning. Explain whether the room will remain furnished and who protects or moves its contents. Crown molding is decorative finish work; it should not conceal an unexplained ceiling crack or water-damaged material. The cause of movement or moisture needs assessment separately from replacing the visible trim.
State what the finished molding includes
Agree on the extent of removal, new material, joint treatment and visible returns. Specify whether filling, caulking, priming and painting are part of the same proposal. A clean carpentry installation may still need a separate decorating stage. Where painted older surfaces will be disturbed, ask the provider about applicable lead-safe requirements. Keep lighting or electrical alterations distinct, even when the new trim is being planned around them.

Project questions
What photographs help with a crown-molding quote?
Show room corners, ceiling transitions and any profile to be matched. Provide dimensions and the chosen molding so the carpenter can assess fitting and joint complexity.
Is painting included after crown molding is installed?
Have the proposal specify removal, fitting, joint finishing, caulking and paint. Agree on how adjoining walls and ceilings will be left rather than assuming attached trim is a fully finished room.
