Scope of baseboard installation & repair
Baseboard work is defined by the rooms, linear runs, material profile, corners, and existing wall or floor condition. Show a sample or photograph when matching older trim. Separate installation or repair from removal, filling, caulking, and painting so the finished height, joints, and final appearance can be compared across proposals.
New room perimeter or a damaged section?
Describe whether the job involves a full room, an addition or replacement of a few damaged lengths. Provide photographs of the existing profile, its height and nearby door trim. Exact matching may depend on available stock or custom work; a contractor should not promise a seamless match without seeing the material. Identify any separate shoe molding or other floor-edge trim included in the request.
Coordinate with the floor and walls
Explain whether flooring or painting has recently been completed and show uneven walls, corners and transitions. Ask who removes old trim and protects finishes. A baseboard can conceal a small finish gap but should not be used to hide an unresolved water problem or structural movement. Wall repair, floor correction and treatment of damaged underlying material need their own assessment.
Define the finishing stage
Agree on the material, profile, joints and visible end treatment, then state whether filling, caulking, priming and painting are included. A carpentry-only appointment may leave finish work for another visit. Ask how damaged paint surfaces or old fixings will be handled. If the work may disturb painted surfaces in an older home, check the appropriate lead-safe requirements with the provider instead of assuming ordinary trim removal is unrestricted.

Project questions
How can I help a carpenter match existing baseboards?
Provide close photographs or a sample showing the profile and dimensions. Identify the rooms, corners and floor transitions so the proposal covers the actual runs and matching work.
Does baseboard installation include a painted finish?
Ask the quote to name removal, fitting, filling, caulking and painting separately. Agree on the final appearance where new trim meets older walls or a changed floor height.
