New York directory

Handyman information across New York State

This is the New York State directory. Choose the project’s municipality to reach local business information, then use the state’s home improvement guidance to prepare a clear written scope and identify the relevant local checks.

New York State is the starting area, not a New York City service promise

A search for “New York handyman” can lead to a New York City company even when the project is in another part of the state. Use the actual location: New York City, Buffalo, Rochester and Albany have separate directory routes. A city or metro description on a company website needs to be read as that company’s offer, not as coverage of the entire state.

The state page helps you choose that next route. The city page organizes information about the selected place; a provider profile identifies an individual business and its published details. Follow those distinctions before sending a request for a different municipality.

Write down the whole home improvement project

Make a list of the intended outcomes before asking for a price. For a damaged wall, specify whether the request includes the patch, texture and repainting. For a door, distinguish a hardware adjustment from replacing the door or changing its opening. Add photographs and product details where they help describe the work.

The New York Attorney General recommends a comprehensive project list and written estimates, and says changes to the agreed work should be recorded in the contract. Keep the final description, material choices and changes together so that the business and homeowner are discussing the same result.

Check the local authority before work starts

Use the property’s jurisdiction when researching approvals. The Attorney General’s guide directs consumers to the local building department and explains that home improvement licensing applies in specified local jurisdictions. A rule or business record associated with New York City should not be assumed to answer the question for every New York address.

Ask which office handles the proposed work and who will obtain any required approval. Keep that answer separate from whether the business will travel to the address and when it can attend. This directory provides research routes; it does not approve the work or reserve a contractor.

New York project questions

Is this New York State page the same as a New York City handyman listing?

No. This hub leads to existing city guides across New York State. Choose New York City only when it matches the project location, and read each business’s published territory before assuming that a New York City or metro listing serves another municipality.

Who should I ask about approvals for a home improvement project outside New York City?

Start with the local building department for the property, using the exact work description. The New York Attorney General’s hiring guide points consumers to local permit and licensing checks. The directory cannot determine the approval or qualification required for an individual project.

For a rented home, confirm who can authorize alterations. In a shared building, ask about access and work rules. An area-wide construction period does not establish the age, condition or safety requirements of an individual home; check the property records and the specific project.
