Name the document rather than call every record an elevation certificate
Davie’s construction-certificate management summary names Elevation Certificates, Floodproofing Certificates and engineered flood-opening certificates. It describes review, correction, storage and public availability procedures. These document names should not be used interchangeably when asking what record exists for a property.
Collect the title, property reference, date and version shown on the document you already have. Identify the feature it concerns and whether you have a complete document or only a page. If a correction or later version is mentioned, ask the Town which record should be used for the enquiry.
Keep record questions separate from the proposed alteration
Describe what would physically change. Surface finishing, altering an opening and changing an enclosure are different proposals; an imprecise request can conceal that distinction. Show the existing feature and mark the part you hope to retain, without deciding what a certificate requires.
Ask the Town or an appropriate qualified designer which record or review is relevant to that proposal. Keep the response with the project description before requesting connected work. Neither a document title nor this directory establishes flood risk, insurance treatment, compliant construction or permission for a particular alteration.
Are the certificate types named by Davie interchangeable labels?
The Town summary identifies separate elevation, floodproofing and engineered-opening document types. Ask which actual certificate applies to the feature under discussion rather than treating the names as substitutes.
What should accompany a certificate-record enquiry before an enclosure change?
Provide the record reference and version, identify the affected opening or enclosure, and describe the proposed change. Ask the Town which existing documents are relevant; do not infer the answer from a title alone.

For a rented home, confirm who can authorize alterations. In a shared building, ask about access and work rules. A citywide construction period does not establish the age, condition or safety requirements of an individual home; check the property records and the specific project.
