Scope of shelving installation
Shelf installation needs the shelf and bracket models, intended load, dimensions, and a suitable supporting surface. Share the proposed layout and photographs of the wall. Clarify measuring, attachment, alignment, and any repairs after old fittings are removed, and distinguish installation of purchased shelves from custom fabrication or changes to a cabinet system.
Floating shelves, brackets or a track system?
Send the shelf model, dimensions and supplied bracket or rail information. Identify how many shelves are needed and what they will hold. A floating shelf, bracket-supported board and adjustable track system have different attachment arrangements. Ask whether the provider supplies materials or only installs purchased products, and resolve missing or incompatible hardware before the appointment.
Discuss the supporting wall and layout
Show the wall, outlets, nearby doors and intended shelf positions. The provider needs to assess the actual supporting construction and follow the selected system's instructions. Decorative finishes alone do not establish what is behind them. Do not choose a load rating from a generic online example or assume a shelf is suitable for heavy equipment because it is level after installation. Structural changes and concealed-service relocation need separate scope.
Distinguish shelves from fitted cabinetry
Agree on the arrangement, installation checks and any accepted trimming, painting or repair of old holes. A wall-to-wall design with custom panels, cabinets or a scribed fit is a broader carpentry project. At handover, retain the product's loading and maintenance guidance and note any missing attachment or unresolved wall issue. Moving stored contents and disposing of old shelves should also be explicitly included if required.
Related work with a different scope
- Custom Shelving & Bookcase Installation: Custom fitted bookcases and built-ins require a measured design and carpentry scope.
- Bookcase Assembly: Freestanding flat-pack bookcases belong under furniture assembly.
- Closet System Installation: Closet systems combine hanging and storage in a specific closet layout.
Project questions
What should a shelf installer know about the intended contents?
Describe what will be stored and provide the shelf and bracket specifications. The supporting surface and intended use should be reviewed together rather than assessing appearance alone.
Does shelf installation include making custom shelves?
Tell the provider whether the shelves are purchased or need fabrication. Measurement, attachment and alignment of supplied components differ from designing and producing a custom storage system.
