Decide whether the question needs a copy or a closure action
The Building Department lists a Freedom of Information route for historical permit/certificate copies and a separate Permit Closure Request for expired and current permits. A document request and a closure question should therefore be named distinctly.
Write down what is missing. You may need to understand the work recorded in an earlier file, obtain a copy for a professional to review, or ask what remains unresolved on the project. Describe that uncertainty before choosing a request route. No historical file was searched and no permit status was established for this guide.
Keep the reference with the repair follow-up
Keep the address, known permit reference, approximate work date and earlier project description together. Mark anything uncertain instead of filling gaps from the building’s age or a previous owner’s recollection. An old receipt can be useful background without establishing the city record.
For a proposed follow-up repair, identify the present condition and the work you want considered separately from the historical question. Ask Building which record or next action fits the situation and retain its direction. Receiving a copy does not, by itself, establish permission for new work or resolve every outstanding question about the earlier project.
Does obtaining a historical Danbury permit copy close the permit?
A copy is not a closure decision. The city lists separate resources for those purposes; ask Building what action is needed for the actual permit rather than treating receipt of a file as its resolution.
What if I cannot tell whether the old permit is expired or current?
Give Building the known address and project reference, explain what you need to learn and ask which route fits. Keep the status marked uncertain until it is confirmed from the actual record.

For a rented home, confirm who can authorize alterations. In a shared building, ask about access and work rules. A citywide construction period does not establish the age, condition or safety requirements of an individual home; check the property records and the specific project.
